The blind sits on a fence line at the north corner of a cut cornfield — 140 yards of open stubble in front, a hardwood draw at roughly 300. I was in it at 4:40 p.m., two hours before legal light ended, because the pigs here come out of that draw and I wanted to be settled long before they did. This ATN BinoX 6 review is the log of that one sit: what the binocular did, what the scope did, and where the handoff cost me time. Two devices, one night, one shot fired.
Running an ATN Binox-6 Dual 640 3-24x (MSBNB6635A) alongside an ATN ThOR 6 640 2-16x (TIWST6635A) splits night hunting into two jobs: the binocular finds and ranges, the scope aims and records. Both run the same 640×512 ≤15 mK core and the same 12.52° × 9.41° field, which is why the handoff is fast.

The setup before dark
Configure everything while there is still light. My pre-dark checklist for a thermal binoculars and rifle scope combo:
- Confirm zero on the ThOR 6. Heating target at 100 yards. Zeroing Freeze holds the image at the shot, so you walk the reticle onto the impact without hurrying.
- Set the binocular eyepieces. Interpupillary distance adjusts 60–74 mm, diopter runs -5 to +5 D. Do it once in daylight and the binocular stops fighting you after dark.
- Fresh cells, spares in a chest pocket. The binocular takes two replaceable 18650s for about 8 hours; the scope runs one internal plus one replaceable, for roughly 9.
- Pick one palette. Both offer White Hot, Black Hot, Iron Red, Alarm, Green Hot and Sepia. I run White Hot on both, so my eye reads the same picture in either device.
- Clear storage. 64 GB on each. For hunting blind footage worth reviewing, don’t start on a full gallery.
Startup on both is under 7 seconds and both wake instantly from standby, so you can shut the binocular down between scans and lose nothing.
How the two-device split actually works
The binocular searches and measures; the scope aims and records. It works because the two share an optical frame. Both run a 35 mm germanium F/1.0 lens over a 640×512, 12 μm VOx sensor at ≤15 mK and 50 Hz, and both give a 12.52° × 9.41° thermal field with 3,100 m detection range. What you see through the binoculars is the frame you’ll see through the scope.
What the binocular adds is everything the scope leaves out: two eyepieces, so a four-hour sit doesn’t wreck your eye; a laser rangefinder good to 1,000 m at ±1 m; GPS and a digital compass; and four vision modes — Day, Night, Thermal, Twilight — including a 1.8-inch CMOS sensor shooting true 4K for the light you still have at 5 p.m. All of it works without touching the rifle.
21:10 — first scan: the ATN BinoX 6 review in the dark
First real thermal scan came forty minutes after last light. At 3x base magnification the 12.52° horizontal field covers the near stubble in three passes and the draw in two more. That ≤15 mK sensitivity separates “there’s a heat blob at the fence corner” from “that’s a coon on the post, not a pig.”
Two features earned their place. Hot Point Tracking marks the warmest object in the frame, catching things at the margin you’d have panned past. And DeFOG kicked in on its own around 11 p.m. when the field started giving up moisture — contrast came back without me touching a menu.

Digital zoom runs 1x, 2x, 4x and 8x on top of the 3x base, out to 24x. I use it for identification only: search wide, confirm narrow.
23:40 — the handoff from binocular to scope
At 11:40 p.m. four pigs came out of the draw and worked left along the edge. This is the part of night hunting thermal optics people underestimate: finding the animal is easy, re-finding it through a different device is where sits fall apart. The sequence that works:
- Read the heading off the binocular’s compass. Mine put the group at roughly 310° — your coarse bearing.
- Range it before you move. One press of the LRF gave 212 yards on the lead animal, ±1 m — while they were still centered in the binocular.
- Note a cold landmark beside them, not the animal. A fence post, a lone cedar, the corner of the draw. Animals move; the post doesn’t. This habit saves the most time.
- Set the binocular down and come onto the rifle at the landmark. The ThOR 6 has its own geomagnetic sensor and gyroscope, so you confirm the heading in the scope first.
- Find the group at base magnification, then zoom. The ThOR 6 starts at 2x — wider than the binocular’s 3x — so the first sight picture is more generous than what you just left.
Because the fields of view match, step four takes seconds rather than a frustrated minute of panning. On this sit the handoff cost about eight seconds. The ThOR 6 640 2-16x has no rangefinder of its own — that’s the binocular’s job, and it’s why you range before you move.

00:20 — the shot, and what an ATN ThOR 6 review comes down to
The shot broke at 12:20 a.m. at a measured 212 yards. An ATN ThOR 6 review isn’t about the spec list; it’s about the last four seconds before the trigger, and there the scope does three things. Picture-in-Picture holds higher magnification on the animal while a wide window keeps the rest of the sounder in view. Reticle transparency control stops the crosshair swallowing a small target — of the ten styles I run a fine one, opacity dialed down. And the 0.49-inch 1920×1080 OLED is clean enough that the limiting factor is me.

The scope is rated to 6000 joules — more recoil than anything I’d put it on. It mounts in 30 mm rings, which are not in the box. Order them with the scope.
What the recording gives you the next morning
Recoil Activated Video is why I bother reviewing anything at all. The ThOR 6 captures up to 10 seconds before and after recoil automatically, to its own 64 GB, without me pressing anything. That clip is the honest record: where the reticle actually was, whether I pulled, which way the animal went.
The binocular records too — 4K daytime video and 1080p thermal video onto its own 64 GB, with audio. On this property that means documenting the scan pattern, so I can see whether I’m really covering the draw or just thinking I am. Both connect to a phone or tablet over Wi-Fi through the ATN Connect 6 app, and both keep an internal gallery for replay in the blind. Real thermal hunting footage is dull — most of it is empty field — but the RAV clip from a shot you second-guessed tells you in ten seconds what an hour of arguing won’t.
Honest limits of running the pair
- 15 mm of eye relief on the binocular. That’s tight. Wear glasses on stand and you’ll be pressing the eyecups. The 20 mm exit pupil keeps the eye box forgiving, but the relief number is what it is. The scope gives 50 mm.
- 730 g around your neck all night. 1.61 lbs is light for what it contains, and it still hangs on you by hour four. Use the standard tripod mount on a long stationary sit.
- Battery swaps in the dark. Roughly 8 hours on the binocular and 9 on the scope covers a normal night, not dusk to dawn. External USB-C power is the real answer for all-nighters.
- Two devices means two of everything. Two chargers, two galleries to clear, two sets of settings, and a zero to verify that the binocular can’t help with. At list, $3,955.00 for the Binox-6 Dual 640 and $2,295.00 for the ThOR 6 640.
Not for you if: you hunt on foot with nowhere to set the binocular down, you wear glasses and won’t tolerate short eye relief, or you only shoot inside 100 yards over open ground. Worth it if: you sit stationary for hours, you identify before you commit, and you shoot far enough that a real range number changes your hold.

FAQ
Do I need thermal binoculars if I already have a thermal scope?
Only if you sit still and scan for long stretches. A scope forces you to hold the rifle up to search, which is tiring and slow. Two eyepieces, a rangefinder and a compass let you search for hours, then hand the rifle a bearing.
Does the ATN ThOR 6 640 2-16x have a built-in rangefinder?
No. The TIWST6635A is the non-LRF version, and the ballistic calculator is an option on LRF models only. In this pairing the Binox-6 Dual supplies the range — 1,000 m at ±1 m.
How long do both devices run on a battery?
The Binox-6 Dual gives about 8 hours on two replaceable 18650 cells; the ThOR 6 about 9 hours on one internal plus one replaceable. Both accept external USB-C power at 5 VDC / 2A for longer sits.
Can I use the Binox 6 Dual during the day too?
